  1. One 80 lb. (36.3kg) of LaHabra® BasiC926 Scratch and Brown Concentrate covers approximately 100 - 140 ft2 (9.3 - 13 m2) at 3/8 inch (10mm) thickness adding 260 to 360 lbs. (118 - 163kg) sand per bag; approximately 50 - 70 ft2 (4.6 . 6.5 m2) at 3/4 inch (19mm) thickness.
  2. One 80 lb. (36.3kg) of LaHabra® BasiC926 Scratch and Brown Sanded covers 25 - 30 ft2 ( 2.3 - 2.7 m2 ) @ 3/8 inch (10mm) thickness; approximately 12.5 - 15 ft2 (1.15 - 1.35 m2) at 3/4inch (19mm) thickness.

Working Time:

  1. Sets in 30-45 minutes after mixing, depending on conditions.

Job Procedure

  1. Surface Preparation:
    1. Wood-based sheathing should be gapped 1/8 inch (3mm) at all edges to accommodate expansion and contraction.
    2. On framed substrates cover exterior grade woodbased sheathings with two layers of a code-conforming water resistive barrier. All other sheathed substrates require one layer of a code-conforming water resistive barrier. For applications over foam plastic insulation board, one layer of a code-conforming water resistive barrier may be used, having a "60 minute" rating. Also conform to all local codes and agencies having jurisdiction. BasiC926 Scratch and Brown requires weather barriers installed and flashed in accordance with the building code and to form a water-shedding surface.
    3. Lath shall be installed in accordance with ASTM C 1063. Metal lath shall be free of rust, oil, or other foreign matter.
    4. On masonry and concrete, apply only to surfaces that are sound, clean, unpainted, and free of any residue which may affect the ability of BasiC926 Scratch and Brown to bond to the surface. Solid bases shall have sufficient suction (ability to absorb water) or surface roughness or both to ensure an adequate bond for BasiC926 Scratch and Brown. Thoroughly dampen at time of application.
    5. Form ties or other obstructions and projecting joint mortar shall be removed or trimmed back flush with the substrate surface.
    6. Do not apply to substrates which are frozen or contain frost or ice.
    7. Apply to surface prepared as for portland cement plaster.
    8. LaHabra recommends the use of control joints with BasiC926 Scratch and Brown. Placement of the control and expansion joints is the responsibility of the project designer.
  2. Mixing:
    1. BasiC926 Scratch and Brown Concentrate: Add to plaster mixer 5.5 to 6.5 gallons (20.5 - 24.5 liters) of mixing water for each 80-pound (36.3kg) bag of BasiC926 Scratch and Brown concentrate to be mixed in a batch. Mixing water shall be cool at a uniform temperature above 40°F/5°C. Maintain same water parameters for all batches.
    2. Add to mixer 80 to 140 lbs. (36 - 64kg) of clean plaster sand for each bag of BasiC926 Scratch and Brown concentrate to be mixed. Plaster sand shall be clean, graded and conform to ASTM C 897.
    3. Add BasiC926 Scratch and Brown concentrate to the mixer followed by the remainder of required sand for the batch size, that is, 180 to 220 lbs. (82 - 100kg) of additional sand for each bag in the batch. Use the same or greater proportion of sand in the second coat than in the first coat. Mix for 3 to 5 minutes until mortar-like consistency is achieved.
    4. For hand applications, stop mixer and allow to slake for 8 minutes. Briefly remix before use (approximately 2 minutes). No unapproved additives of any kind should be added under any circumstances.
  3. Sand Type shall be graded in accordance with ASTM C 144, ASTM C 897, within the following limits:

    Sand Type% Weight Retained
    (U.S. Standard Sieve)(Cumulative)+/- 2%
    No. 40
    No. 80-10
    No. 1610-40
    No. 3030-65
    No. 5070-90
    No. 10095-100

    1. BasiC926 Scratch and Brown Sanded: Add to plaster mixer 2-1/2 gallons (9.5 liters) of mixing water for each 80-pound (36.3kg) bag of BasiC926 Scratch and Brown Sanded to be mixed in a batch. Mixing water shall be cool at a uniform temperature above 40°F/5°C. Maintain same water parameters for all batches.
    2. Add BasiC926 Scratch and Brown Sanded to the mixer. Mix for 3 to 5 minutes until mortar-like consistency is achieved.
    3. For hand applications, stop mixer and allow to slake for 8 minutes. Briefly remix before use (approximately 2 minutes). No unapproved additives of any kind should be added under any circumstances.

NOTE: If BasiC926 Scratch and Brown is acrylic polymer modified and LaHabra® Exterior Stucco Color Coat Finish is used, then the Exterior Stucco Color Coat Finish must be acrylic modified as well. No unapproved additives are allowed.

  4. Application:
    1. Apply BasiC926 Scratch and Brown scratch coat by pump or hand trowel to an approximate thickness of 3/8 in. (10mm) per coat. Surface of the first or scratch coat shall be crossraked or scratched, usually horizontal, to form a mechanical key for succeeding second or brown coat.
    2. Apply BasiC926 Scratch and Brown brown coat by pump or hand trowel to 3/8 inch (10mm) minimum thickness. Darby, then rod brown coat to a true and even plane to provide a total scratch and brown thickness of 3/4 inch (19mm) when specified. Float brown coat to provide a rough surface for an integrally colored cement based finish. Trowel brown coat smooth for acrylic finish but avoid over-troweling. Finish to specified tolerances.
    3. Interrupt BasiC926 Scratch and Brown application only at junctions of wall planes, openings or control joints to avoid cold joints and abrupt changes in the uniform appearance of succeeding coats.
    4. BasiC926 Scratch and Brown must be moist cured for the first 48 hours after application; depending on the environmental conditions it may be necessary to moist cure 4 or 5 times a day. Moist cure by uniformly spraying clean water on the wall to thoroughly dampen the BasiC926 Scratch and Brown. There should be no visible water on the surface when a succeeding coat is applied. To improve the bond between the coats and reduce rapid water loss, the brown coat may be applied as soon as the scratch coat is sufficiently rigid to resist cracking from the pressure of the brown coat (per IBC 2003, Section 2512.8, "The second coat is permitted to be applied as soon as the first coat has attained sufficiently rigidity to receive the second coat."). BasiC926 Scratch and Brown application shall be in compliance with requirements of applicable codes, regulations and agencies having jurisdiction.
