DESCRIPTION
Tuffstone Granite is designed to make interior or exterior walls beautiful and durable with ceramic beads and large mica chips in a clear, 100% acrylic binder which provides an almost seamless, permanent, toughsurfaced, granite-like wall with distinctive character.
USES
Tuffstone Granite is recommended as a low maintenance, weatherresistant, durable finishing coat designed for high traffic areas, both indoors and outdoors. Tuffstone Granite provides design flexibility, subtle beauty and creative colors on properly prepared EIFS, concrete, masonry, plaster, interior drywall or stucco subsurfaces. Tuffstone Granite is washable and quick and easy to patch almost seamlessly. The 100% acrylic binder provides outstanding flexibility and weather resistance. On exterior surfaces, additional resistance to dirt pickup, staining and mildew can be achieved by applying a sealer.
ADVANTAGES
- Tough, fine, durable aggregate, that resists abrasion and marring.
- Non-toxic, safe to use and cleans up with water.
- VOC compliant with no harmful odors.
PACKAGING
60 lb. pail
COVERAGE
Coverage is approximately 75 - 100 square feet per 60 lb. pail. Depending on texture, surface conditions and technique of application, coverage may vary slightly.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
LaHabra requires that all applicators attend an educational seminar on LaHabra Interior Finishes. LaHabra recommends that the project owner or designer approve a job-site mock-up of the application of this product. The mock-up should demonstrate the products. appearance under the conditions given by the project specification(s).
Surface Preparation
- All surfaces (interior or exterior) must be free of grease, oil, efflorescence, curing compounds, form release agents or any other bond-inhibiting material.
- Surfaces must be clean, smooth, structurally sound, unpainted and dry. Damaged or loose material must be removed by sandblasting, waterblasting or wire brushing.
- Using leveling materials, patch, resurface, repair or level surface to proper smoothness and tolerance, leaving little or no surface irregularity. Do not apply over irregular surfaces.
- Consult ASTM D 4258 and ASTM D 4261 for additional details on methods of preparing concrete and masonry substrates.
Concrete - Concrete must cure at least 28 days before applying Tuffstone Granite. Wash with muriatic acid and completely flush with water if curing compounds, efflorescence or form release agents are on surface of concrete. Remove all projections and fill small voids with a leveling base coat to ensure a smooth surface.
Masonry - Make sure joints are flush, then skim with a leveling coat to ensure a smooth surface.
Stucco - Try a test patch and check for bond strength before applying if there are additives in stucco. Apply over cured and primed stucco. Primer in matching granite color is required for adhesion and appearance. See Cautions and Limitations for application over stucco. Interior Gypsum Wallboard Surfaces - Prepare drywall as for painting and apply a primer. Surface must be free of dirt, dust or other bond-inhibiting materials.
Base Coat - Base coat must cure at least 24 hours before applying Tuffstone Granite.
Mixing
Use clean, rust-free electric drill and paddle. To assist with workability, you may add a small amount of clean water but limit amount in order to get finished texture desired.
Application
Trowel Application
- A Primer in correct color is recommended and should be applied to all substrates using brush or paint roller a minimum of four hours before Tuffstone Granite is applied.
- Apply Tuffstone Granite to an even layer, using a clean, stainless steel trowel. Work the trowel in a single direction to make a smooth surface.
- Lightly float the surface using a clean plastic float several times. This will bring the large mica to the surface and enhance the granite appearance.
DRYING TIME
For exterior surface under average drying conditions (70 ºF, 55% relative humidity), Tuffstone Granite should dry for 24 hours. Allow wall to dry at least 24 hours before being sealed. Protect area from rain until completely dry.
CLEAN UP
Use soapy water immediately while Tuffstone Granite is still wet. Once dry, the finish can only be removed mechanically.
STORAGE AND HANDLING
Store in tightly sealed containers out of sunlight at or above 40 ºF. Do not allow to freeze. Keep protected from direct sunlight and extreme heat.
SHELF LIFE
Tuffstone Granite will last 12 months when properly stored.
CAUTIONS AND LIMITATIONS
- Do not use as waterproofing. Do not use below grade.
- Do not use Tuffstone Granite directly over foam plastic, gypsum board or other insulation type boards.
- Do not apply Tuffstone Granite in a thickness greater than 1/8" in any single coat.
- Tuffstone Granite must not be used on exposed exterior horizontal surfaces. Minimum slope is 27º or 6:12 inches.
- There can be minor color variations due to raw materials. For best results, use one batch number for each separate wall section. Check batch numbers before beginning application. If possible, order all Tuffstone Granite at one time so the same lot of raw materials is used for a complete order. Avoid applying different batches side-by-side.
- Do not apply in direct sunlight.
- Use only when surface and air temperatures are above 40 ºF (4 ºC) during application and drying time. Do not allow to freeze until completely dry.
- Do not use Tuffstone Granite on surfaces subject to hydrostatic pressure or continuous or intermittent water immersion.
